Our Curriculum

First School Montessori is designed to assist the children as they grow and mature by offering a stimulating variety of programs designed to meet their needs. Our classroom environment is designed to use multi-sensory academic learning materials with the "whole" child in mind. The children receive individualized instruction in a multi-age grouping which enhances a non-competitive learning environment.

1. Practical Life Exercises

These exercises help the child develop motor skills and perfect his/her muscle coordination and movement; build a sense of responsibility for order in his/her environment; and assist the child to gain independence, develop powers of concentration and control of self. Additionally, these exercises indirectly prepare the child to understand the basics of fundamental mathematics.

2. Sensorial Exercises

These exercises refine the five senses and help the child in learning to discriminate, classify and compare. These materials teach the concepts of color, weight, shape, texture, size, sound and smell.

3. Language

The language materials allow the child to discover that sounds have meaning and then to isolate the parts of speech. This leads to an understanding of the use of sentences. This constant learning of language eventually results in using a wide range of vocabulary. Also, a variety of oral, written and reading opportunities are provided to the child through the use of sandpaper letters and other Montessori materials. Creative writing is introduced with the moveable alphabet.

4. Mathematics

These exercises introduce the concept of quantity and the symbols (numbers) for the quantity. Additionally, through the use of a variety of beads and symbols cards, the child becomes familiar with the decimal system, including the operation of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Basic concepts of fractions, geometry and algebra are also introduced.

5. Computer Education

Children are introduced to computers which is used in the mathematics and language areas at later stages.
